UP – Makalu 5

With the MAKALU 5, flying is simply fun! Like the popular MAKALU 4, its successor has everything pilots need to take full advantage of the low-B classification. Safe, simple and with an extra portion of potential for cross-country flights. Of course, the typical UP handling is also back at the start.

Christian Rönning, CEO: “After a short break in the MAKALU series, we now have the eagerly awaited continuation. This closes the gap in our product range in the low-B segment and once again offers the many fans of the MAKALU a state-of-the-art paraglider – naturally including the popular handling typical of the UP.”

Note: Pre-orders are now possible  – delivery will start in January 2025.

Description

  • Higher performance than its predecessor, yet just as safe and easy to fly
  • 3-line concept with color coding of the line levels for easy sorting before take-off
  • Improved riser geometry for efficient use of the speed system and a higher top speed
  • NGA (New Generation Airfoils) designed for maximum stability combined with best performance
  • AIP (Air Intake Pockets) on the lower leading edge help to keep the shape of the air intake accurate at all times, especially during accelerated flight
  • FSS (Front Section Support) for a perfectly defined leading edge. This brings advantages in terms of increased performance, weight saving and ease of packing
  • Mini-ribs and BTS (Brake Tension System) on the trailing edge for an aerodynamically optimized profile
  • Double 3D shaping reduces creases in the fabric and increases performance
  • Practical Snaplock magnets for attaching the brake levers
  • 5 sizes – XS, S, SM, M and L – covering a weight range of 58-130kg
  • What’s new?

Even small details in the design often make a big difference. Just like the optimized material mix. In the case of the MAKALU 5, this means that the shape of the wing profile has changed. As it was developed in parallel with the RIMO 2 (EN/LTF A), some design tricks can be found in both wings. However, as a (low) B wing, the MAKALU 5 is sportier, achieves a better glide and therefore higher top speed. This is also noticeable in a direct comparison with its predecessor. In terms of the material mix, the MAKALU 5 scores points with its robust D30 cloth, supplemented by Skytex 40 Hard Finish in the inner structure.

    How does it fly?

The UP test pilots are unanimous: the MAKALU 5 is simply fun! This includes easy line sorting and launching as well as full performance when flying, without the feedback from the canopy appearing nervous or the extreme flight behavior – for example in the event of collapses – being overwhelming. UP generally attaches great importance to handling. The MAKALU 5 makes it easy to feel thermals and crank them out. On the other hand, when things get bumpy in the air, this wing has your back with its roll damping, among other things. Forgiving and still sporty? Yes, the combination has been successful here.

    Who is it suitable for?

The MAKALU 5 (EN/LTF B) is designed for exploring the skies. Whether you are a beginner from the A class, an occasional pilot or a safety-conscious frequent flyer – everyone will be happy with this paraglider. Learning, experimenting and achieving ambitious goals are just as much a part of the package as finely tuned, direct handling. In other words: the MAKALU 5 is sporty, but never unsteady. The (low) B certification also stands for large safety reserves. The ideal mix, as preferred by a wide range of paraglider pilots.

Alternatives depending on personal preference would be our High-A DENA and our Mid-B KIBO X, the latter a 2.5 liner.

    What sizes are available?

The five available sizes – XS, S, SM, M and L – cover the large weight range of 58-130kg. We recommend choosing the canopy load in the middle. If you are between two sizes with your own take-off weight, it can help to test fly both – often your gut feeling will tell you which one suits you better. In general, the smaller the wing or the higher the wing loading, the more dynamic the flight behavior will be. It can also help to think about what might change in your equipment in the near future. For example, the weight of the (new) harness plays a role in the decision.

What is included in the scope of delivery?

In addition to the MAKALU 5 there are: Flex Bag pack sack, riser bag, compression strap, repair kit, e-manual and a small UP gift. You can also buy an optional UP backpack.
